Texas Republican Lobbyist News: Gov. Perry Encourages Texas Employers to Hire More Veterans
The following is a digest of an article that originally was published on the Governor of Texas’ website. We are posting this summary as a public service for Conservative and Republican Texas politicians, lobbyists, and other interested parties.
Governor Rick Perry has made the call for Texas employers to make a point to hire veterans. There are multiple organizations in Texas that help connect veterans to employment where their skills can be utilized. The Texas Workforce Commission and Texas Medical Center’s “Red, White, and You!” campaign are both directed at veteran employment. Governor Perry encouraged employers to reach towards these organizations to find their employees, rather than having these organizations short on employers and with a surplus of people looking for work. Perry met with troops stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso on October 11th, and thanked them for their sacrifice and hard work.
“‘The talent and experiences our veterans bring back from their service in the military are an important, and, all too often, untapped resource for our communities,’ Gov. Perry said. ‘The Hiring Red, White & You! campaign is a great opportunity to help veterans utilize their skills to get a job in Texas, and help employers find talented and experienced individuals to fill open job opportunities.’ The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of September, while veterans nationwide have an unemployment rate of 6.7 percent, those who served in the military post 9/11 have an unemployment rate of 9.7 percent.”
The Texas Workforce Commission, TWC, provides substantial veteran’s services. They offer employment services, education, case management, and job training for Veterans. The TWC even has a two day hold on all job postings, to ensure that veterans receive the first viewings. They also provide a specific job search for veterans receiving their services. TWC services are perfectly tailored for veterans, working with and improving upon the skills that they bring to the job. These skills make for desirable employees, and TWC works hard to further and increase these favorable application bullet points.
“Red, White, and You” is a statewide job fair that makes the connection between employers and veterans looking for work. It’s run by Texas Medical Center. Many veterans have already received training make them ideal job candidates, having come from very structured, often technical jobs and careers. Rick Perry and TMC’s Dr. James Henry “Red” Duke Jr. formed the catalyst that started this program.
